*Africa History:
Africa’s history goes back way further and is way richer than most textbooks cover. Here’s the big picture:
*1. Ancient Civilizations – 3000 BCE to 500 CE*
- *Egypt*: The pyramids, pharaohs, hieroglyphs – one of the world’s first major civilizations.
- *Nubia/Kush*: South of Egypt in modern Sudan. Ruled Egypt for a century, famous for iron-working and their own pyramids.
- *Axum*: Modern Ethiopia/Eritrea. Major trading empire, one of the first to adopt Christianity in the 4th century.
- *Carthage*: North Africa, founded by Phoenicians. Rivaled Rome until destroyed in 146 BCE.
*2. Great Kingdoms & Empires – 500 CE to 1500 CE*
This is Africa’s “golden age” of trade and learning:
- *Ghana, Mali, Songhai*: West African empires built on gold + salt trade. Timbuktu in Mali had universities and libraries in the 1300s when much of Europe didn’t.
- *Great Zimbabwe*: Southern Africa, known for massive stone cities and gold trade, 11th-15th century.
- *Swahili Coast*: East Africa – city-states like Kilwa and Mombasa trading with Arabia, India, China.
*3. Colonial Era – 1500s to 1960s*
- *Slave Trade*: Trans-Atlantic slave trade ripped millions from West/Central Africa, 1500s-1800s. Also had Arab slave trade across the Sahara and Indian Ocean.
- *Scramble for Africa*: 1880s-1900s – European powers drew lines on a map and split the continent. Only Ethiopia and Liberia stayed fully independent.
- *Colonial Rule*: Railways, schools, and new borders – but also resource extraction and loss of self-governance.
*4. Independence & Modern Africa – 1950s to Today*
- *Decolonization Wave*: Ghana 1957 kicked it off. By 1980, almost all African countries were independent.
- *Post-Independence*: Mix of challenges – coups, civil wars, but also growth, new tech, and cultural influence.
- *Today*: Africa has the world’s youngest population, fastest-growing cities, and huge influence in music, art, and tech.
Key point*: Africa wasn’t “discovered” by outsiders. It had complex societies, universities, trade networks, and technology long before colonialism.
